In 2017 the news was announced that Tarantino pitched an idea for a Star Trek film that he would direct with the screenplay to be written by Mark L. Smith. The idea was to create a sort of Pulp Fiction in space. The film would be an earthbound story set in a 1930’s gangster setting. The pitch was inspired by the episode A Piece of the Action were the Enterprise crew visit a planet that has a culture like 1920’s gangster culture from earth.

The plot would have also included time travel elements. The film would have been r rated and might have possibly been his tenth and final film. In January 2020 it was conformed that Tarantino was no longer attached to project stating that they might make the film without him, and he would be happy to give them notes whilst they are making the film. Due to Star Trek Beyond underperforming sat the box office paramount paused the franchise to figure out what to do next. Tarantino’s script was one of three presential Star Trek films in development at the time. In 2021 it was announced that a new Star Trek film was underway that wasn’t Tarantino’s.

During talk of the film Rod Roddenberry son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and CEO of Roddenberry Entrainment stated he struggled with Tarantino’s Star Trek film. He stated that although he loves Tarantino and his films, he was worried that the inherent optimism of Star Treks world would be gone in favour of action. He sated that he was curious about were his film would go sating that he doesn’t want it to just be Reservoir Dogs in space. He believed that being a Star Trek fan however Tarantino will understand this.

Regardless of your personal options on the idea Tarantino’s vision of Star Trek was interesting to say the least.
