Top Gun Maverick is a 2022 action film directed by Joseph Kosinski and is a sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun starring Tom cruise who is also in the sequel. The film involves Maverick who confronts his past whilst training a group of young recruits for a dangerous mission including the son of his dead friend. Top Gun Maverick is a fun entertaining film that is worth a watch.
The direction in the film is good. All the actors work well together and create a great rag tag team. However, there is an element of friction between the two main characters in the film that works well and creates a good story in the film. The mood of the film is fun and entertaining throughout but there is some depth to the relationship between the two main characters that works in the film. The style of the film has some seriousness to it giving the film some meaning however there is also a light-hearted element to it.
The acting in the film is good. Tom cruise does a good job as Maverick reprising his character from the first film and plays a likable character with some depth to it. Miles Teller does a good job as Rooster the son of Goose who clashes head with Maverick in the film. Jennifer Connelly does a good job as Penny Mavericks love interest in the film. Jon Hamm does a good job as Cyclone a navel seals commander that also buts head with Maverick. Glen Powell does a good job as Hnagman one of pilots that is shown to be a bit of a dick. Monica Barbaro does a good job as Phoenix a mission candidate that plays a good character in the film. Lewis Pullman does a good job as Bob Floyd a mission candidate. Ed Harris does a good job as Hammer Mavericks superior on the program that clashes with him in the film. Val Kilmer does a good job Iceman a commander that is a close friend of Mavrick.
The writing in the film is good. The film is fun and entertaining with a good energetic element throughout. There is also a good element of depth to the film with Maverick confronting the ghosts of his past and reconnecting with his friend’s son and his wife. The three-way relationship between them and the problems they all have with one another and must overcome is what drives the film. The special effects are good. The practical scenes of the pilots in the planes are amazing and the effects really help to sell the main action pull of the film.
Overall Top Gun Maverick is a fun entertaining action film that is well worth a watch.
