Shin Ultraman is a 2022 Japanese superhero film directed by Shinji Higuchi and written, co-produced and co-edited by Hideaki Anno based on the 1966TV show Ultraman. The film centres around an extra-terrestrial that accidently kills a man while battling a Kaiju and takes on his appearance and place at the S-class species suppression Protocol to protect Earth from further threats. Shim Ultraman is a fun entertaining film that any Kaiju fans will love.
The direction in the film is good. All the actors work well together in the film and complement each other well. The film has a good close nit group of characters that you follow throughout the story that you like and care about towards the end. The mood of the film comes across like a classic superhero story that is grounded in realism. The mixture of entertaining superhero romp combined with a story with real world repercussions and a somewhat dark story line makes for an interesting mood. The style of the film is good with a mixture of Governmental Boracay mixed with kaiju action heart emotion Ultraman being human by taking a human life and feeling remorse for it makes him an interesting character and injects the film with humanity.
The acting in the film is good. Takumi Saitoh does a good job as Shinji Kaminaga a half human who was killed by Ultraman who now takes on his form. Masami Nagasawa does a good job as Hiroko Asami a no-nonsense analyst that works for the department that defend the earth from monsters. Daiki Arioka does a good job as Akihisa Taki a unparticle physicist who is likable nerd and the brains of the operation. Akari Hayami does a good job as Yumi Funaberi a universal biologist that is part of the defence force to save the earth. Tetsushi Tanaka does a good job as Tatsuhiko Munakata the chief of the operation and the main person in charge. Hidetoshi Nishijima does a good job as Kimio Asami the head of the operation. Hideaki Anno and Bin Furuya do a good job as Ultraman the hero of the film
The writing in the film is good. The film is a good entertaining fun romp that capture your interest from begging to end. The film is a crazy story about saving the world with over-the-top moments. The film is good entertaining fun with crazy monster fight and superhero’s making a very entertaining film. However, there is also a seriousness to the film as the character of Ultraman is fleshed out and becomes a real charter there is some depth to him beyond just a cartoon hero which makes for an entertaining story and an interesting film.
The cinematography in the film is good. The cinematography for the most part is decent and presents the events in the film well. The film has a good use of showing size and scale as the monster fights and the characters feel big and imposing in impressive way. The special effects in the film are good. The special effects are good and harken back to old Godzilla type films. The effects of things like energy beams are good and make for cool effects. The GCI in the film not amazing however considering the film being Japanese with a not incredibly large budget they are not bad.
Shin Ultraman is a fun entraining film that any Kaiju fan should watch.
