Prey is a 2022 science fiction action film directed by Dan Trachtenberg and is part of the predator franchise. The film stars Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Michelle Thrush, Stormee Kipp, Julian Black Antelope and Bennett Taylor. The film revolves around a young Comanche woman Naru who wants to prove herself as a hunter. From this she finds herself having to protect her people from both the Predator and French fur traders. Prey is a good Sci-Fi an action film and after several disappointing sequels acts a welcome addition to the franchise being the best in the series since the original.
The direction in the film is good. All the actors in the film work well with each other and really make the film work. the protagonists in the film are tribal people and, in the film, they really feel like part of a group having a good back and forth energy with each other. The mood of the film is good the film is fun throughout whilst also feeling the most like the original. There is an epic feel to the movie as it really feels like a fight for survival. The film feels the most horror-esc scene the original to which further helps to set the intense mood the film is going for. The style of the film as a real gritty man vs nature element to it. The film has a genuine sense of danger and survival to like anyone could die at any time.
Amber Midthunder does a good job as Naru. She plays a young headstrong woman who want to prove herself and protect her tribe by killing the predator. Dakota Beavers does a good job as Taabe Naru’s brother and a skilled hunter. He plays a headstrong character that wants to prove himself and cares for his sister. Dane DiLiegro does a good job as a good job as the Feral Predator he plays a version of the Predator that feels more primitive than part incantations and gives a good physical performance. Michelle Thrush does a good job as Arukas mother who doesn’t like her ways and is a traditionalist woman. Stormee Kipp does a good job as Wasape a Comance hunter that looks down on Naru and who represents the traditional viewpoint. Julian Black Antelope does a good job as Chief Kehetu a traditionalist leader that wants to protect his tribe. Bennett Taylor does a good job as Raphael Adolini a Italian translator hired by the French that comes to blows with Naru bhut they also try and help each other.
The writing in the film is good. The film shows a good use of a person trying to prove themselves within the predator franchise. The film showcases themes of man vs nature and human survival as the predator real works well within this setting. Everything comes together in the end and resolves itself with a great finale. The cinematography in the film is good. The film has beautiful shots throughout that really show the scope and scale of the film and the wilderness. The film has a gritty look to it that really works and fits the setting of the film. The special effects in the film are good. There are lots of great practical effects in the film that are great with the best design of the predator in the franchise with a bone mask. The film also incorporates CGI but odes it well with a good use of practical effects.
Prey is a good film. It is an intense sci-fi action horror that is a fitting entry in the franchise and the best predator film since the original.
