Hellraiser is a 2022 supernatural horror film directed by David Bruker and is a remake of the 1987 film of the same name. The film centres around a young female drug addict that ends up with a mechanical puzzle box that summons coenobites humanoid beings who thrive on pain and pleasure. Hellraiser is a great remake that any fan of the original would love.
The direction in the film is good. The film has a ferly small ensemble cast that works well together and makes the film focus on a close tight nit group of characters you care about. The mood of the film is taken very seriously. The film is first and foremost a horror film and it works well. The film takes itself seriously leading to a dark gritty and disturbing film that sell its horror well. The film’s style was the classic body horror elements of the Hellraiser series, but its tone is serious and has aa focus on its characters leading to a good dramatic story along with the horror.
The acting in the film is good. Odessa A’zion does a good job as Riley McKendry a recovering drug addict. Jamie Clayton does a good job as The Priest the leader of the coenobites. Adam Failson does a good job as Colin Matt’s boyfriend. Drew Starkey does a good job as Trevor Rileys boyfriend. Brandon Flynn does a good job as Mathew Rileys estranged brother. Aolife Hinds does a good job as Nora Matt and Colins roommate. Goran Visnjic does a good job as Roland Voight the hedonistic millionaire and businessman who serves the cenobites.
The writing in the film is good. The film works well as a horror film offering up a good number of gory scares and good horror. The plot of the film itself is generally interesting and has a lot of depth and intrigue to it as you don’t know what will happen next. The characters are fleshed out in the film and given a lot of depth and characterisation making them interesting within the film. The cinematography in the film is good. The film is well shot with a good use of lighting in some scenes. The practical effects are also good. The practical effects look great. The practical blood looks good and really sells the horror of the film. The costume design also is great with practical looking demon effects for the coenobites that sell the otherworldly look of the film. The props are practical, and all look good giving the film an old-school horror feel.
Hellraiser is a great gory body horror film that nay fan of the original will love.
