Evil Dead Rise is a 2023 American supernatural horror written and directed by Lee Cronin. The film stars Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland as two estranged sisters trying to survive their family from deadites. The film also stars Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Neil Fisher. Evil Dead Rise is good horror film and a fitting edition to the evil dead franchise as a fan of the series the film delivered in being a gory, scary, enjoyable horror film.
The direction in the film is good. With the film have a small cast the film ultimately rests of the actors having good chemistry with one another. Thankfully this is the case as all the actors have good chemistry with one another making it believable. The mood of the film acts as a pure horror film and ditches the franchises comedy. The sombre serious nature of the film feels more like the remake in that it takes the concept seriously and works to create good horror. The style of the film feels very evil dead with the long sweeping camera work and strange angels. However, the film also feels modern with its cinematography and defiantly with its lighting.
The acting in the film is good Lily Sullivan does a good job as Beth. The character although flawed is a good person. She cares about her family members and her transformation into a demon killer is great to see. Alyssa Sutherland does a good job as Ellie playing a woman possessed by a demon and acts as a good intimidating presence in the film. Morgan Davis does a good job as Danny one of the younger children in the care of the mother. You feel for his character as he ultimately suffers a terrible fate.
The writing in the film is good. The film is a scary, gory thrill ride that harkens back to the horror films of old. The film has some generally disturbing and scary moments that the film really sells. With the film having a limited number of characters the film benefits from the small cast the that you care about them and their situation. The film is also fun in a certain way being an over-the-top gore fest the film very much. Feels like a part of the evil dead universe as is enjoyable for fans to watch.
The cinematography in the film is good. The film is shot well and does a good job and conveying the horror. The classic POV shots of the original evil dead are here and work effectively. However, I do wish there were crazier camera work like the original evil dead films. The special effects in the film are good. The piratical gore effects look great and really help to sell the horror of the film.
Evil Dead Rise is a good horror film. A gory, scary, fun thrill ride that any evil dead fan can get a kick out off.
