Crimes of the Future is a 2022 science fiction body horror drama film written and directed by David Cronenberg and staring Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux and Kristen Stewart. The film follows a performance duo who perform surgeries for audiences in a situation where human evolution as accelerated much of the population. Crimes of the Future is a film about the evolution of the humanity through experimentation through sugary and self-mutilation and finding art within this eroticism creating a society addicted to erotism and sadomasochism.
The film starts showing a remote secret building in the sea by a beach as a kid eats a plastic bin who is smothered to death by his mother as a mercy killing showcasing the brutality of this cruel world. His mother ten calls for him to be found by her ex-husband as she breaks down crying. This showcases the evolution of humanity creating new organs eating different materials effectively creating a new type of human. The husband finds his son dead and breaks down crying as the two main characters Saul Tenser and Caprice are introduced as world-renowned performance artist couple showcasing a new form of art created through eroticism. Saul lies in a biomechanical bed that looks like half a cocoon with umbilical cords holding it up attached to a piece of flesh on the roof. This again shows the evolution of humanity into a new organism. He is in constant pain due to him constantly growing new organs in his body however now he can’t grow them anymore. This showcases the evolution of humanity as people are creating a new type of being.
Saul is growing a new gland a brand-new functioning organ creating a new pain centre ultimately creating a new form of art. Saul also has a biometric chair made from bone helping him digest food due to the new organs growing in his body. This again showcases the evolution of the human body creating art from this evolution. This sadomastic evolution is shown when a guy has sex with a prostitute in an alleyway whilst cutting her with a knife. Saul and Caprice go to meet bureaucrats from the national organ registry which is government office upholding the states restrictions on human evolution by collecting and storing newly evolved organs. The film showcases the evolution of humanity into a new species were the human emotions of pain and pleasure merge. This organisation is secret now, but they are about to go public for the first time. They discuss the importance of the organ registry from a security standpoint as the bodies are changing body the government has an office regarding human evolution as it is going not be controllable as pain has almost disappeared as a function as well as worrying about functions meaning there is not hygiene. The agency has been producing organs and having them removed like tumours by performance artists as now everyone can perform surgeries as the girl is as medical surgeon and everyone wants to be perforce artist. This again showcases the evolution of humanity into one where humanity is evolving to a new species were pain and pleasure and one and humanity is sort of performance.
They look at Saul’s new organ tattoo cataloguing these new unknown organs as they are now register them as no longer human as there a now just the subjects of performance art, as people argue that these tattoos strip the organs of meaning and function. This showcases the dangers of the artificial evolution of humanity creating a human that is more of art peace that a living being stripping them of their humanity. Saul has an organ bed attached to him helping him along with the chair that needs to be serviced like a machine. As people are amazing by his bio mechanical autopsy machine and watch it as a live performance as people are filming it and taking photos. This showcases the evolution of humanity. As people are becoming obsessed with their own personal evolution and from this uses it as voyeurism and enlightenment seeing enjoyment in the disturbing. The TVs around the operation room say boy is reality linking to Cronenberg’s film videodrome in that in this low-tech world body evolution is all. The machine performs the surgery of Saul as Caprice controls it via a device in her stomach that looks like an external womb. The machine then cuts into Saul and removes a new organ from him as they both experience sexual pleasure. This shows the evolution of humanity as humanity creates new organs making the human body art. Timlin a nervous female bureaucrat tender captivated by his astatic goals as she tells him surgery is the new sex and wants him into her. The films culture is art over all as people are infatuated by his body horror art as his detective kills people by giving them solids to eat. This showcases the evolution of humanity as people self-created evolution creates sexual pleasure evolving humanity.
The detective in the film has a lump on his abdomen as he talks to two surgeons about Saul Tensor about his organ art liking them to growths as the film asks the question does Saul subconsciously will these new organs to grow as this demonstrates the evolution of humanity. As Saul sleeps in his bio pod again it is shown that he has shorted the intake between growths which worries caprice with highlighting the dangers of the forced evolution of humanity. The new human art organ peace ends up being a man who has his eyes and lips sown and his ears growing all over his body, as he can navigate purely by sound as an art peace with an intertribal dance as the film shows the evolution of humanity is formed by the art of the human body. One of the women however says its not a good design as the doctor who does the same thing says this work is a political problem. This shows evolution being designed by people creating the perfect organism. Saul talks to a guy about the idea of a live autopsy on a dead body specifical his son who was murdered by his mother as he continues to struggle to digest food. This showcases how humanity is stripped down into nothing criticising evolution and modification at the expense of human emotion. They connect to the surgery equipment again as Caprice strips naked inside the cocoon as they must modify the boy corpse showcasing the disposability of the human body. She receives sexual pleasure from surgical cuts as they work about what angle to play the autopsy as they are both naked inside the machine. This shows the evolution of the film as pain and pleasure are part of the human body. Tener and Lang meet underground as he doesn’t like what is happening into the body more specifically his body as Caprice goes to the old cocoon repair shop talking about execrated evolution syndrome showing the evolution of the human body.
The film showcasing the idea of designer organs showcased blanketed inside a cocoon. Tense then meets with Lang as they show the beauty of new organs as a way into the future like an evolutionary beauty pageant as Tanser and Caprice talk about how everything’s coming along finding love through the masochism of cutting themselves with the machine. Tenser shows Caprice his stomach zip as the inner beauty pageant with a new organ with has new function as sugary is obsolete and is shown as she unzips his stomach in a sexual way showcasing the evolution of humanity and sexuality. Tenser then hears about Langs son having the ability to eat plastic and it not a human as she killed him. This again showcases the evolution of humanity and how it destroys people. Lang is shown around the base that makes the plastic bars as she is going ahead the autopsy of his child to show it to the public showcasing the artificiality of the evolution of humanity. Caprice then continues her performance as another person has surgery on her head in a sexual way as she enjoys the trauma and finds peace in despair in cutting yourself open to create something new showcasing the forced evolution of humanity. Capirce and Tenser talk about the desire to be open as she wants to perform the autopsy showing a new emotion showcasing the evolution of sexuality. Tenser then meets with Lang as they discuss the art of the human body as they need him as he registers for the inner beauty pageant showcasing the evolution of human biology.
Timlin and Tensor talk about the importance of the organ as form of art as she loves and hates it. They talk about the new organ that ingests plastics showing the evolution of humanity. The other doctor is then killed by technicians to stop the competition from Tenser. It turns out everyone has had the same plastic eat surgery showcasing the evolution of humanity and technology. The people in the film eat waste to comment on the environmental damage as the cant eat normal food as they have now evolved to only eat plastic showcasing the evolution of humanity. Tenser is shown to be an empty body filled with meaning as Tenser performs the operation on Brekans body symbolically filling an empty body full of meaning.
It turns out Brekans naturals organ system has been replaced by artificial organs showcasing the artificial evolution of humanity. This also links to the themes of environmentalism. As this as killing children and people, must dive inside themselves to find themselves and act their own evolution. Lang ends up fleeing in fears as he is approached by two agents who supposedly work for the corporation that manufacturers Tenser’s biomechanical machines, as mincing the earlier killing of Nasatir they assassinate Lang by driving power drills in his heads showcasing the fears and dangers surgical editing with the evolution of humanity. Tenser then talks to the cop as they had a man on the inside that they got to him first. The body was natural nod they covered it up as they didn’t know about Langs death as Tense becomes part the cause as he is not part of the police anymore. This demonstrates the destruction of humanity and that despite the films criticisms on humanity tinkering with evolution it seems to be an inescapable fate. The film ends with Tenser and Caprice having sex as he is in pain. This shows that his reality is almost normal and natural as he felt a genuine human emotion. However, this is short lived as Tenser tells caprice about a dream he had of being controlled by everything including her showcasing humanities forced evolution makes people slaves. The film ends with him struggling to eat in his chair as he gives in and she feds him a plastic bar as he sheds a tear as smiles as the chair finally quiets. This shows him finally giving up his humanity and embracing the next state of human evolution but finally shedding his humanity in the process.
Crimes of the Future is about the investable evolution of humanity. It shows how humans will surgically mutilate themselves into seemingly a higher state of being as the film criticises this forced bodily evolution as it comes at the cost of one’s normal human emotions and ultimately at the cost of ones humanity.
