Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend is a 1989 anime film directed by Hideki Takayama and starring Christopher Courage, Sho Aikawa and Michael Lawrence. The centres around three worlds that exist the human world, the demon world and the beast world that is soon to be disrupted by The Overfiend a powerful demon that will be reborn after 3000 years to recreate the earth as a perfect world. Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend is a dark crazy over the top 80s anime film that is one of the most insane anime ever made.
The direction in the film is good. The film has a great haunting feeling to it with the demon world having an otherworldly horror to it feeling like hell, as well as this the demon sex scenes at the begging have a great 80s anime feel. The film has a great 80s anime feel to it which is 80s style also shown with the high school setting. The very much feels like an 80s anime with a sleazy sexual feel, this is shown with the protagonist being a pervert and is ultimately not a likeable person or a traditional protagonist. The film has epic demon fight scenes and is crazy and over the top. The film combines its horror style with a sexual feel as the film has an 80s anime and horror movie feel to it, as well as a comedic aspect to it. The film is very 80s, very funny and very sexual as everything revolves around Animno and Akamee’s relationship. There are great sleazy 80s gory horror scenes of people being killed with dead bodies being strung up in a gory way as well as good body horror imagery. The monsters give the film a classic horror feel as well as an epic 80s anime feel with over-the-top gory monster fight scenes.

Amino and Akame have a sweet relationship, witch in contrast to the demon realm that has an otherworldly hellish feel to it as the girls are killed in a gory body horror way. The demons are presented as these dark otherworldly beings that are evil, manipulative, and cruel as well as a good use of cosmic horror. Niki no having demon power descends into sexual excess as the film has a great surreal otherworldly feel to it. The film has an apocalyptic feel to it, with magical fights in the film are surreal, epic, and gory. The film has epic stylised anime fight scenes with lots of light flairs and lighting effects that create high octane fight scenes, which are epic and over the top in a very anime way. The anime is hypersexual with a very epic feeling. Not only is Nicky sadistic but the anime itself is sadistic as well as being epic in an 80s stylised way. The film is epic, gory, and metal, however mickeys death in the film is shown as genuinely sad as the Tojin is shown as both the saviour of humanity and its destroyer.
The film has a good use of eastern mysticism to it with a post-apocalyptic feel. The film has a lot of great sexual depravity to it with demons raping humans as the Tojin is shown to be the destroyer of everything an unstoppable monster. The Kaiju monster that animo fights is then brought back to life by lesbian ghosts, which is in contrast with Amino and Magumi’s sex scene with is sweet however this is undercut with the demon awakening. The horror of Animo’s demon form starts to show as what follows is epic biblical destruction. It very much feels like the end of the world as an epic kaiju boss fight ensues. The film is apocalyptic as Animo uses his epic powers to defeat the other monster. Animo’s powers are like a bomb exploding causing mass destruction witch in on a galactic level as the apocalyptic destruction is insane and has a hopeless feel to it. The destruction in the film is presented as sad witch is surreal and otherworldly. It is demonstrated that the world must by destroyed for this new Eden to happen and as he tries to destroy the world as Magumo tries to kill him. Akame recognises him which stops the destruction for a moment as he helps him thinking about Animo as the brother and sister reunite. Akame then tries to kill Nagumo to kill himself as he cries in a genuinely sad scene however the Tojin stops them and says he must destroy the world and both Nagumo and Akame must die for the Tojin to be born. The film reveals in the climax that the Tojin created everything but due to the sin of all three worlds everything must be destroyed to create a perfect world as the beastman vowless to live to see the new world as the Amono destroys everything.
The voice acting in the film is good. Christopher Courage does a good job as Amano a loser of a teenage that is a bit perverted but a good guy that has a crush on a girl. Rebel Joy does a good job as Akemi Ito Ameno’s love interest in the film. Sonny Weil does a good job as Kuroko the beast woman in the film. Bick Balse does a good job as Ozaki. Jurgen Offen does a good job as Suikakujyu. Barbie O’Buoy does a good job as Fukakuki. Camille Way-Pene does a good job as Changing Gymnast. Greg Puertolas does a good job as Jujinkai Elder. Kathleen McNearney does a good job as the Makai Queeen. Herb Hummel does a good job as Satsuki. Ron Kalish deos a good jkob as the bald beast man.
The writing in the film is good. The film presents an interesting concept with mankind not being alone and that there are demons and half demons known as beastmen and the overfiend the god of gods will appear and untie the world creating peace and harmony, it also states that the demons have looked for the Chojiin for 300 years but now they have found him. Two half demon beastmen are then sent to the human world to look for the Chojin, as this happens the protagonist Amano is introduced as a pervert masturbating to Akaame as he is then found out beaten up and hamulated as he is presented as a kind of pathetic wimp and somewhat unlikable.
Akame goes to a teacher who tries to have sex with her. She strips and molests her as Amono watches her, he then realises she’s a demon as she has a giant eyeball tong and rapes her. The demon then transforms using lots of tentacles as the demon sees the two of them watching and blasts the door down. They get into a fight as amino blasts his head off as the demon transforms and bites his arm off as amino uses his powers at close range and kills the demon as Ossaki is seen to be the Chojin, as this happens Magumi Amono’s older sister has also come the human world to look for the tojin. Akame thinks Amono saved her life and falls in love with him as the brother and sister are looking for the tojin as Akame and Amino go on a cute date with each other and fall in love. Ozaki ends ups having a threesome when his demon form comes out form his penis where he finds mutilated dead bodies. The demons appear and attack him as one of the monsters tries to eat him with its stomach. He then bursts out of the monster stomach as the other monster attacks each other. They then find the Tojin as the brother attacks and kills him as the discovers his not the Tojin. Animo awakens in his demon form and rapes a nurse, his ejaculation is made to of pure energy and destroys her. The demon then rises from the hospital as a giant creature and the demon king is waiting in the shadows to defeat the Tojin and plans to defeat him using someone that hates Amino.
Amino and Akame get closer as Nicky gets jealous as Amino and Akame have a sweet relationship as the go to the demon realm. The film explains that after 3000 years the Chojin will unite the human, demon, and beast worlds to bring peace and Nagumo is that person. As this is going on Niki gets bulled by girls in a dominatrix like way as he is forced to lick her foot as his powers awaken and he kills all the girls. The demons grant Niki demonic power by manipulating him, as Niki is shown to have alcoholic abusive parents. Niki chops off his own penis and attaches a demon penis giving him demon powers as Niki now has the power of a demon beating up a street gang. Niki descends into sexual excess in anger of Nagumo having Akame as the film links to the idea of density as the film showcases that a famous earthquake was caused by demons. The brother and the demon get into a fight as he wants to destroy the Chojin as Niki also has hatred for him and wants to destroy the Chojin. As Nicky dies it shows he has her item in. his hand showing that he loved Akame as both her and Nagumo are racked with guilt as he runs away. The beastman is confused as the Chojin is meant to save the world but he is making it worse. He then talks to his master who doesn’t know and thinks maybe the legend is wrong. To know the truth, he travels to the future with the help of the last of his old master’s power. The male beastmen the n travel to a post-apocalyptic future where demons are raping human as both humans and demons run in fear of the tojin who descends onto the world like the devil. The tojin fries of giant penis lasers as mass scale destruction is shown. The film is full of eastern mysticism as he gets sent back in time just before he can find out. The demons reincarnate kakaju but he cannot return to full strength so he must use their bodies as his queen says that the demon realm will be destroyed if the Tojin is successful. Animo has an existential crisis as Akame finds him and they confess the love to each other and make love. As they are having sex his demon form awakens as they climax as his true destructive power is shown as Animo becomes a demon.
Animo’s demon form awakens as he starts to destroy everything as the demons kill everyone. Animo as the demon obliterates everything in his path, as he wipes out almost all the humans and beast men in a single blast. A demon of. The ocean is then summoned to defeat the Tojin as the other monster is defeated easily. The Animo demon then blast a beam into mount fuji destroying it as the destruction will destroy the planet. Anno is told by Kakaju that the Tojin will destroy everything however he can be destroyed as his being weekend in the battle. Nagumo tires to kill him as Animo peace Nagumo’s skull as he flies off. Akema’s body is used by their child the Tojin, as his father and mother were born to create him. Animo his father must destroy the world for the tojin to fix it as only though destruction can a perfect world happen. Nagumo tries killing him as he destroys the world as Akame recognizes him and stops the destruction for a moment and helps him as his still Animo as the brother and siter reunite. Akame tries to get Nagumo to kill her as she cries in a sad scene, however the Tojin stops them as he must destroy the world and then they must both die for him to be born. The film ends stating that the Tojin created everything, but all three worlds are filed with sin and that the Tojin will destroy the world create a perfect paradise as the brother vowels to live to see the new 2orld as the Tojin destroys everything.
The cinematography in the film is good. The film has decent cinematography with a good use of red lighting. The film has a good use of weird, interesting filters with a god use of dark lighting. The film also has a good use of light and dark blue lighting. The film also uses purple, green and pink lighting effectively. There’s a good use of flashing lighting and surreal backgrounds as well. There is also a great use of shadows and gritty animation and lighting which looks weird at times. There is also a cool shot of the world in space as well as dark and gloomy look and a hypnotic feel throughout the film.
The animation in the film is good. The film has good 80s anime style animation as well as a good use of colours with deep reds and black shadows. The film has weird, interesting filters as well as cool flashing lights and effects in the fight scenes. The film has gritty almost rotoscope looking animation, which is combined with a cool body horror animation style with the monster designs. There are cool light effects in the film with great monster designs that have a very 80s horror style. The film has great body horror and gory animation. The monster designs in the film cool and unique as well as some real cool looking attacks such as the dragon energy bean effect. There is a very cool imagery of a blue lighting demon which has electricity shooting out of him which turns yellow and red, there is cool visuals such as when amino gets hit by aa truck as the animation becomes black and white line drawings as well as cool dark lighting with black shadows. There again is epic dark animation where a demon penis destroys a hospital as the demon awakens as well as this there is cool people coloured energy animation around the demon. The demon itself looks cool and the creature have a weird Lovecraftian body horror look to them. The demon realm itself looks like hell as the demons have an otherworldly look. The film has weird surreal otherworldly character designs as well as a cool bit of animation with shows epic surreal energy bean orientated fight scenes that show mass destruction. The film has 80s anime animation that is very stylised, as the streaks of light like lighting in the fight scene turns to dragons. The flashing light colours in the film are stylised and has good flashing animation.
The film has good gory 80s anime animation and weird surreal body horror imagery. The film has good post-apocalyptic imagery and good gritty dark animation. There is cool green electricity and lighting and surreal experimental imagery. The awakening of the demon is biblical with epic animation, there is also great imagery of epic purple lighting shooting into the heavens destroying everything. There are great scenes of destruction of the city being destroyed, with the lighting used in these scenes of destruction being amazing. The animation gives the film an epic feel as the epic surreal magic animation is combined with apocalyptic destruction. The film has insane apocalyptic destruction as well as cool shot of the world in space. The film has a good dark and gloomy look to it which feels hypnotic as the animation shows incredible destruction with demonstrates the apocalyptic ending showing the end of the world.
Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend is a dark, crazy, insane film that any old school anime fan would love.
