Bad Taste Review
Bad Taste is a 1987 science-fiction comedy horror film directed by Peter Jackson. The film is about aliens who invade a fictional New Zealand village to harvest humans for their intergalactic food francize were they face off against a four-man paramilitary unit. Bad taste is a fun over the top low budget splatter film were its charm makes up more its low budget.
The direction of the film is good. The film is sometimes serious but primary a comedy and very much feels like a cheesy low budget b movie. The scene was the military shoot at the aliens make the film feel like a cheesy b movie comedy and there is a comedic tone throughout the film. There is a comedic light-hearted nature to the film that makes it almost feel like a comedy sketch but played straight. The film is a slow burn and very much plays out like a classic alien invasion story. The film is like invasion of the body snatcher but in B-movie form with funny moments such as the researchers listening to rock music in their car. The films protagonists come off as parodies of secret agents with an alien invasion shown to be funny. Even with the film being a low budget there is some cleaver stuff such as the aliens having a hive mind. The film is a mixture of comedy and tension and at times comes off like an 80s action movie. There is lots of good comedy in. The film as one of the soldiers fires his gun through the other person as the film presents tension in a comedic way. This comedic tension is used with its b movie style showing comedic fighting. There is good visual comedy in the film with one of the characters cutting a piece of card and puts it in his shirt to look like a vicar the films low budget nature helps for this rag tag operation. The film shows a comedic take on the Texas chainsaw massacre were a guy in captured by aliens and is placed in a barrel of water with an apple in his mouth classic horror elements are shown in the film such as people trying to close a window which is shown as comedic. The film is very much a comedy horror shown with the parody of the Texas chainsaw massacre the film is great with comedy and tension as one of the human aliens dies by slitting his own throat for imitation. The film balances comedy and horror as one of charters constantly has bits of his Brian fall out of his skull so he puts them back in his head. The film shows a comedic tone to serious events as the film presents both tension and slapstick comedy very well. There are generally funny moments in the film such as one of the characters being slapped and the funny plot of them taking over the world to make humans food to sell them as a fast-food company. The aliens invade in a rag-tag way very much like aa 80s action movie. One of the guys. Shoots the aliens blood from his head wound which goes into his drink in a comedic way. There is also a comedic gun fight were the army shoots a tree and lots of people fall out of it. The film is great b movie action film with them talking about taking out the aliens and the guy’s brain falls out constantly throughout the film, as the movie becomes more violent. At the end of the film, they all shed their human form revealing their alien form making an all-out war between aliens and humans. One of the army guys ends up going commando gets a load of weapons and goes after them and the guy blows up the car with a rocket launcher. They end up blowing half the house with a rocket launcher and goes in to kill the aliens. One of the guys cuts them up with a chainsaw and goes crazy. At the end the main alien tries to fly away as the house turns into a spaceship as the guy chainsaws the main alien to death then wears his skin to disguise himself and goes to their planet to wipe them out.
The writing in the film is good. The film is an alien invasion comedy with a b movie feel. They shoot the aliens, and the film is clearly a comedy with certain lines of dialogue with a comedic tone throughout. In the film scientists research what’s happening in a very funny film. The uses the classic conspiracy theories of aliens for comedic effect as one of the researchers get kidnapped by the aliens disguised as humans. The people chased after the aliens disguised as humans the film is funny showing different researchers listening to rock music in the car as the alien invasion is shown to be funny. The film is a slapstick comedy invasion as one of the army people must fight aliens in hand-to-hand combat. There is lots of good comedy as they cut the rope with a sledgehammer. The film is funny as they talk about aliens then get caught as they chase after the other military guy. The film is a good slapstick comedy as one of the army guys pretends to fire a gun. He then kills them and tumbles off a cliff. There is lots of funny bits to the film as they worry about the dead guy’s birds as well as the army feels like an unprofessional rag tag operation as of them get kidnapped by aliens to be eaten. The film has both comedy and tension as one of the humans dies by slitting his own throat in imitation the film has comedy and horror to it as bits of his brain and skull falls out, so he puts them back in. The low budget of the film is shown in the rag tag team of soldiers and people in the film. The film has a perfect balance of tension and comedy as the alien’s plan to invade earth. The army guy then discuses himself as one of the aliens with a funny showcase of their plan of them taking over the world to make humans food like a company. The film has a weird ritual as they drink vomit with funny dialogue. They then take out the aliens in a funny slapstick way. The glasses wearing researcher buts bit of brain in the back of his head and goes crazy and tries to kill his friends. The aliens then shed their human form to reveal here human form casing a war between aliens and humans. One of the guys goes commando gets a lot of weapons and goes after them as they end up blowing up a car with a rocket launcher as they go in to kill them. The end of the film one of the guys cuts all the aliens up with a chainsaw and goes crazy before chainsawing the main alien to death and wars his skin to disguise himself as he goes to wipe out their planet.
The cinematography is decent. There is nothing incredible about it but there are some nice silhouette shots considering the low budget. There are some nice shadows in the film and a cool shot were the chainsaw cuts a perfect shape in a wall.
The acting in the film is good. Terry Potter does a good job as Ozzy, Pete O’Herne does a good job Barry, Peter Jackson does a good job as Derek, Mike Minett does a good job as Frank, Craig Smith does a good job as Giles, Ken Hammon does a good job as one of the aliens, Coasta Botes does a good job as another one of the aliens, Doug Wren does a good job as Lord Crumb.
The special effects in the film are enjoyable in an 80s cheesy way. The film is full of low budget gore effect that the guy who gets shot and half his brain falls out there are bloody effects throughout the film. there are low budget dummy effects and a guy’s head being pulled off in a pool of blood creating an alien like spine thing. The film has a good use of practical effects with green vomit and gore as well as cool explosions and miniatures.
Bad taste is a fun funny over the top film that is gory fun for any splatter film fan.
Meet the Feebles review
Meet the Feebles is a 1989 New Zealand puppet musical black comedy directed by Peter Jackson. The film uses Jim Henson-esc aesthetics with puppet/muppet like characters who put on a musical show that instead of the muppets positive characters have negative character traits. Meet the Feebles is a fun over the top film that has an over-the-top feeling that is highly enjoyable.
The direction in the film is good. The film is presented in a classic muppet style before the adult nature of the film is exposed, as Trevor the rat insults Heidi the hippo saying, “alright you fat slag move your ass”. Bletch is a walrus and is Heidi’s boss and lover who she complains to about this who is having an affair with Samantha a Siamese cat behind her back. The film that shows the newcomers of the film Robert the hedgehog and Lucille the dog as the wide-eyed newcomers, they are presented more like classic muppets not used to the showbiz world. This is further shown when the fly character a sleezy journalist tries to court Robert showing that the real showbiz world is dark, Lucille the dog is also introduced another newcomer and her and Robert have a star-crossed lover’s kind of thing. There’s lots of good humour to the film as it doesn’t take itself to seriously with musical muppet like numbers. The film introduces a heroin addicted frog stuntman whose story is a portrayed of classic fame. Heidi a prostitute that is having an affair with Samantha’s husband Bletch gets into a fight with Samantha and throws her in a box. Robert and Lucile’s relationship is the only innocent thing in the film, as the film constantly shows dramatic real world problems actors have such as illegitimate children. The film then shows a flashback of Heidi and Bletch as an once innocence romance, juxtaposed with the film’s dark reality of Harry a sex addicted bunny that ends up getting aids. In one scene a dominatrix cow is being whipped as Harry stops it thinking she is being hurt showing the innocence of the character, the film shows that every character has a darkness to them with Wynyard the frog who is shown to be a Vietnam veteran with refences to Full Metal Jacket and The Deer Hunter. The film shows the sleazy exploitative style of the higher ups on rising stars, as this happens Harry the Rabbit gets aids showcasing the real problems that stars get into as the fly exploit him for seedy journalism showing how the media uses these stars for their own gain. Trevor then drugs Lucile and tries to rape her showcasing the real-world examples of a manager taking advantage of the actress. The film has another muppets-esc musical number but because of her weight Heidi destroys a swing and runs off crying with her eating cake it shows the downfall of actresses as you can’t get fat in the showbiz world and when she finds out Bletch is with another girl she runs off crying. The film shows a coke deal with Bletch and the others in charge as Bletch manipulates Heidi with sex to get her to perform. Bletch and the gang gets drugs and money from the Scottish drug dealer, as a giant spider eats one of the henchmen as they run away only to be eaten by a big fish as they drive their car through his body killing him. Harry the rabbit becomes an aid-stricken mess as Wynyard the frog does heroin in a trainspotting-esc scene. Bletch kills the fly reporter in a gory funny scene as Bletch and Heidies relationship ends which is one of the films driving forces. The film is disgusting but that’s what makes it works and is full of dark moment such as Hedie trying to commit suicide. In a dark and funny way Hedie goes from committing suicide to turning to gun round and kills Samantha as Wynyard accidently kills himself in his knife throwing act. It turns out that Harry doesn’t have aids but in a sad twist of fate he is shot dead by Hedie, as Sebastian does a musical number about sodomy as he is then killed by Bletch. Hedie massacres everyone on the stage Sidney the elephant then has an act of redemption to try and save his child but is killed. Robert rescues Lucille from being shot and professes that he still loves her as Lucille tells him the truth about Trevor’s attempt to rape her. In the climax Hedie shoots Bletch and it seems as if they still have some feelings for one another, however Trevor shoots her trying to kill her as Robert knocks him down as Hiedie kills him and Bletch as they tell her they will have to ring the police witch she accepts and ask Arthur to play the garden of love witch he does. In the epilogue Sydney looks after his son, Arthur received an OBE then retired, Sabastian wrote a book about what happened, Robert and Lucille are married with two children with Robert being a photographer for a women’s fashion magazine and Heidi went to prison now works in a supermarket.
The writing in the film is good. The film is presented. In the classic Muppet style before exposing the film adultness, the adult nature is then shown immediately when Trevor the rat insults Heidi the Hippo saying, “alright you fat slag move your ass”. Bletch a walrus who is Heidi’s boss and lover is having an affair with a Siamese cat behind her back and she complains to him, as this is going on the newcomers in the show are introduced Robert the hedgehog and Lucille the Dog who are the wide-eyed newcomers like classic muppets as they are innocent and not used to the showbiz world. The fly in the film is like a parasite buzzing around Roger trying to get information, him a Lucile the dog are the newcomers and have a star-crossed lovers thing going on. There’s lots of good humour in the film as it doesn’t take itself too seriously as the film is a musical with muppet like characters. There is a heroin addicted frog stuntman with a classic fame story, as this is going on Heidi gets into a fight with Samantha a prostitute and throws her in a box. Robert and Lucile then fall to each other as this happens Sid the elephant has a beer with Arthur as his ex-girlfriend Sandy chicken and a showgirl puts a paternity case against him as he must look after their child an elephant chicken hybrid. The film flashbacks to Heidi and Bletch shows the innocence that they cone loved each other as he promised them both stardom which is contrasted to the reality of Bletch and the others do a coke deal. Harry the sex addicted bunny ends up getting aids as a dominatrix cow gets whipped as harry stops it thinking she’s being hurt showing his innocence. Wynyard the frog is shown to be a Vietnam veteran with references to Full Metal Jacket and The Deer Hunter as Trevor tries to converse Lucille into staring in porn films. Harry the rabbit gets aids as the film exploits him for seedy journalism as Trevor the rat drugs Lucile the dog and tries to rape her showing how managers in entertainment can take advantage of actresses. The film has muppets-esc musical number but because of her weight she destroys a swing and runs off crying and stress eats showcasing the downfall of alto of Hollywood actress as well of this idea that actresses can’t get fat. Bletch then does a coke deal but find out the coke in Broax leading to the dealer being killed, he then miniplates Heidi with sex to get her to perform as him and the gang get the drugs and money form the Scottish drug dealer. As a giant spider then eats one of the henchmen as they run away and get eaten by a big fish as they drive though it escapes and killing it in the process. It tuns out Harry is an aid-stricken mess as Wynyard the frog does heroin in a trainspotting-esc scene. Bletch kills the fly inn a gory funny scene, Heidi then tells Bldetch that she’s loves him, but she disgusts him now causing her to run off and cry. It turns out Harry is aids ridden and vomits everywhere as Heide wants to commit suicide. Heide is about to kill herself and ends up killings Samanthsa as Wynyard accidently kills himself in a knife throwing act. It turns out that Harry doesn’t have aids but ends up being shot dead by Hedie as Sabastian does a musical number about Sodomy before being killed by Bletch. Sidney has a redemption arc with him saving his child and ges shot and injured in the process. Robert rescues Lucille from being shot and professes that he still loves her, and Lucille tells him the truth about Trevor adapting to rape her. Hedie shoots Beltch and it is shown that they still have some feelings for each other, but Trevor shoots her trying to kill her. Robert Knocks Trevor who is then killed by Heide who also kills Bletch. Arthur tells Heidi that he is going to have to ring the police witch she accepts and ask him to play the garden of love witch he does as she sign it. In the epilogue we are told Sydney is with his son, Arthur received an OBE then retired, Sebastian wrote a book on what happened, Robert and Lucile married with two children and Robert is a photographer for a women’s fashion magazine, Heidi went to prison and now works at a supermarket.
The cinematography in the film is decent. The film is decently shot with a nice use of dark lighting. The film using black and white flashback scenes and blue lighting. The film also has a good use of both orange and red lighting.
The acting in the film is good. Mark Hadlow does a good job as Robert the Hedgehog the voice of Heidi the Hippo and Barry the Bulldog. Peter Vere Jones does a good job as Bletch the Warlus and Arthur the Worm. Donna Akersten does a good job as Lucille the Dog and Samantha the Cat. Brain Sergeant does good job as Wynyard the Frog, Trevor the Rat and Dr. Quack the Duck. Ross Jolly does a good job as Harry the Rabbit and Dennis the Aardvark. Mark Wright does a good job as Sidney the Elephant.
The special effects in the film are good. The puppetry work is great the puppetry is a mixture of hand puppets and costumes with a giant spider puppet that all work to great effects in. the film. the bloody digesting effects in the film are great. The film is full of bloody gory effects with liquid goo, vomit and urine that helps with the disgusting nature of the film.
Meet the Feebles is a fun over the top film that any B-movie fan will enjoy.
Dead Alive Review
Dead Alive is a 1992 New Zealand zombie comedy splatter film directed by Peter Jackson. The plot follows Lionel a young man that lives with his very strict mother Vera. After Lionel and a girl named Paquita fall for each other Vera is bitten by rat-monkey hybrid creature and begins to transform into a zombie whilst also infecting the town. Dead Alive is a fun funny over the top gory film that is a must watch for any horror fan.
The direction in the film is good. The film starts in a comedic mystery adventure Indiana jones style. With a zoologist finding a mysterious creature and trying to steal it only for the creature to bite them and tribe to chase after them and kills him. The film has a comedic over the top style to it as well as a bit of an Indiana jones style at the begging when they load it onto the plane. The film contains themes of fate, mysticism, and destiny with protagonist Lionel’s girlfriend Paquita’s grandmother being a fortune teller. When Lionel comes into their shop, he makes a mess trying to get liquorice but ends up making Paquita’s symbol. Lionel however lives with his domineering mother Vera who is an oppressive force who doesn’t want Paquita in his life, she manipulates Lionel throughout the film such as smashing the vase to gilt trio him to control him in a comedic version of Psycho. The film shows glimpses of Lionel’s backstory with him being afraid of water as it shows someone dying, he explains that he almost downed his dad saved his life by drowned in the process. A romance starts to happen between Lionel and Paquita which is then cut with the dark comedy of them discovering the rat in the zoo, the tone of the film is comedic, dark and over the top elements of mysticism. Vera who was stalking them gets bitten by the rat, she rudely refuses Paquita’s help and manipulates Lionel to look after her as the rat’s death reenforces the over-the-top gory comedy of the film, as well as showing hoe Vera constantly emotionally manipulates Lionel. As the romance between Lionel and Paquita blossoms the infection of Vera worsens as the grandmother uses her tarot card reinforcing the elements of omens of doom and symbolism within the film. Even infected Vera uses emotional manipulation on Lionel leading to a funny moment were Lionel fixes her skin with superglue. Vera tries to be sophisticated Infront of her friends at lunch which descends into a disgusting but funny scene where she eats food like a monster, shots blood form her arms into the man’s custard east her ear when it falls in the custard. The film is full of over-the-top gory excess with Vera eating Paquita’s dog before attacking her and falling down the stairs and dying. The film goes form sad to over the top in seconds were Vera dies only for her to kill the nurse by ripping her head backwards as the film is full of crazy over the top fight scenes. A good part of the comedy is the funny over the top lengths Lionel goes to keep the people close to him alive even if their zombies by sedating them, as the film has a crazy over the top style with camera angles and effects. Themes of mysticism and spiritualty are throughout the film with Lionel effectively been cursed and given a pendant, what makes the film funny is the over-the-top lengths Lionel will go to keep Vera sedated. Vera’s corpse ends up exploding before the funeral as the film contains lots of crazy over the top slapstick comedy. The graveyard scene in the film is great were punks attack Lionel and desecrate Vera’s grave. Vera rises from the grave and attacks them as the priest attacks them only to be bitten with is a funny fun over the top scene chaotic and full of action. Lionel ends up having the zombies around the dinner table given them sedatives like a funny messed up family dinner, the film also has a funny slapstick scene were Lionel takes a zombie baby for a walk as he chases it around and both get injured. You really feel for Lionel and root for him in the film as things go form bad to worse or him. His uncle blackmails him into handing over his house and inheritance to him to not say anything to the police. In a sad scene Lionel and Paquita injects them all with what they believe to be poison, but it turns out its animal stimulates which revives them. The zombies are revived and attack everybody as all hell breaks loose as the zombies attack the party killing people as Lionel, Paquita and Les try and survive in a very gory scene. The film is full of good comedy as Lionel tries t run on slippery bloody floor, as Les removes the zombie vicar’s teeth, as a zombie woman is thrown into a light and fries her head. Lionel stomps one of the zombies down on the broken wooded door only for him to split in half as he in thrown on the toilet and flushes the chain as blood flows out of him. As if via destiny the neckless directs Lionel to a chest where he discovers the truth, which is shown juxtaposed with the funny scene of the baby zombie vs Paquita. Lionel discovers his dad had an affair with another woman and finds her bones, Lionel then falls through the ceiling and dangles by a thread as the zombie’s approach. The film has a lot of good slapstick comedy as a zombie child kicks Les in the balls and runs after him, with a funny bit were Vera thinks she’s been bitten by a zombie but it tuns out its dentures. Vera in her monster form rips Les’s head and spine apart predator style, Lionel then comes in like a badass and mows down zombies with a lawnmower. The lawnmower scene is one of the goriest bloodiest scenes ever, as the zombie baby rips through Rita’s face and walks inside her. The house then catches fire as Vera becomes a giant zombie creature and bursts through the floorboards as they run from her. At the end of the film Lionel trapped on the roof confronts his mum. She lied to him about his dad, his dad had an affair with another woman and drowned them both in the bathtub and Lionel sore as a child. Vera tries to kill Paquita and puts Lionel in her stomach symbolic making him a constantly dependent child. Lineal then cuts himself out of her stomach symbolically being born again are Vera is killed and falls into the burning house as he rescues Paquita and they escape as the police put out the fire as Lionel throws the pendant away no longer needed it as they kiss and walk off together.
The acting in the film is good. Timothy Blane does a good job as Lionel Cosgrove a likable but submissive young man who is contently dominated by his overcontrolling mother and really comes into his own by the end of the film. Diana Peñalver does a good job as Paquita Maria Lionel’s love interest that is very likable in the film. Elizabeth Moody does a good job as Vera Cosgrove Lionels domineering mother. Ian Watkin does a good job as Uncle Les Lionel’s uncle that takes advantage of him. Brenda Kendall does a good job as Nurse McTavish that looks after Vera. Stuart Devenie does a good job as Father McGruder a priest that becomes a badass in the film. Jed Brophy and Murray Keane does a good job as Void and Scroat the punks that desiccate Vera’s grave. Glenis Levestam and Lewis Rowe does a good job as Nora Matheson and Albert Matheson the people in charge of the board Vera is involved in that have a funny interaction with Vera. Tina Regtien does a good job as Mandy one of Paquita’s friends. Elizabeth Mullane does a good job as Rita one of Paquita’s friends. Harry Sinclair does a good job as Roger. Davina Whitehoue does a good job as Paquitas Grandmother a fortune teller that prophesises and warns Lionel and Paquita. Silvio Famularo does a good job as Paquitas father an arsehole but a funny one.
The writing in the film is good. The film begins with researchers trying to steal a mysterious creature’s witch bites him and they kill him. The film is comedic and very the top as they load the creature on the plane to get the money. The film contains themes of fate, mysticism, and destiny in the film with Akitas grandmother being a fortune teller, when she meets Lionel the symbols the fortune teller spells are the ones, he makes with the mess showing their destiny. Lionel lives with Vera his domineering mother in a comedic version of psycho as Lionel and Veras arrange to go to the zoo, but Vera wants to control him. Vera manipulates Lionel throughout by smashing a vase to guilt trip him so that she can control him. The film shows glimpses into Lionel’s backstory of him being afraid of water because he almost drowned his dad saved him, but he died. A romance blossoms between Lionel and Paquita were romance blossoms between the two of them as the jungle rat kills a monkey. The film goes into the backstory of the rat being found on a special island, Vera gets bitten by a rat and rudely reenforces Paquita’s help and manipulates Lionel to look after her. Vera constantly emotionally manipulates Lionel with both sympathy and being angry at him, as a romance between Lionel and Paquita blossoms. As this romance blooms Vera’s infection gets worse as the grandmother uses tarot cards to predict the future showing the omens of doom like symbolism in the film. Even when infected Vera uses emotional manipulation on Lionel as Lionel fixes Vera’s skin with superglue. Vera tries to be sophisticated Infront of her friends at lunch, but it descends into a disgusting but funny scene where she eats food like a monster, shoots blood from her into the man’s custard wee he east it and eats her ear when it falls in the custard. The film is full of over-the-top gory excess with vera eating a dog before falling down the stairs and dying, as the film switches form sad to. Over the to pin a second as vera dies only for her to come back zombified and kills the nurse by ripping her head backwards. Lionel throws a duck at the nurse’s head knocking it backwards almost off her body, leading to him to get tranquilisers from a dodgy doctor to sedate the zombies and knock them out. Throughout there are parts of Lionel’s memory watching his mum drowning his dad and the woman has been having an affair with, Lionel must knock her out with serum in the shop that she crashes through. Vera’s corpse explodes as she attacks Lionel by coming out of the coffin as they crash through the window causing a commotion. A lot of the comedy comes from the crazy lengths Lionel goes to stop Vera by not actually killing her as he digs up her grave to pump her full of the serum. In the graveyard scene the punks attack Lionel and desecrate Vera’s grave only for vera to attack them as the priest attacks Vera only to be bitten is funny, fun, over the top and full of chaotic action. Lionel has the zombies around the table and gives them sedatives like as funny messed up family dinner, as the nurse and priest zombies have sex leading her being pregnant and having a child. Lionel breaks up with Paquita and gets punched by the delivery guy as he hits an all-time low, the film has lots of funny slapstick scenes were Lionel takes the zombie baby for a walk as he chases it around and they both get injured. Things go from bad to worse for Lionel as his uncle blackmails him into handing over his house and inheritance to him not opt say anything to the police, as Paquita and Lionel are at his uncle’s house party. Again, mysticism is a big part of the film with the death surrounds him line, the zombies are then revied and attack everybody as all hell breaks loose and the zombies attack the party killing people as Lionel, Paquite and Les try and survive in a very gory scene. There is good comedy in the film as Lionel tries to run on the slippery bloody floor, as Les removes the zombie vicars’ teeth. A zombie woman is then thrown into a lightbulb and fires her head, as via destiny the neckless directs Lionel to a chest where he discovers the truth. The zombies attack Paquita’s friend who kicks a zombie into her who hits it with a frying pan leaving an indentation. She is about the blend the zombie baby when she has a change of heart but when it. Vomits on her she turns it on, but it jumps on the lamp and falls on the blade bouncing on the top as she punches the baby causing it to fly backwards and hit Les in the testicles. Lionel discovers his dad had an affair with another woman and finds her bones, as Lionel falls through the celling and dangles by a thread as the zombie’s approach. The film is very much a slapstick comedy as the zombie child kicks Les in the balls as he runs after him, as well as when vera thinks she’s bitten by a zombie but it’s just his dentures. Vera who has now transformed into a monster rips Les’s head and spine apart in a predator like death. Lionel then comes in like a badarse and mows down zombies with a lawn mower in of the goriest bloodiest scenes ever. A zombie baby then rips through Reta’s face and walks in aside her as the house catches fire and Vera becomes a giant monster creature and bursts through the floorboards as they run away from her. At the climax of the film, Lionel trapped on the roof with Vera finally comforts his mum. He exposes that she lied to him about his dad and that his dad had an affair with another woman and drowned them both in ten bathtub and Lionel sore this as a child. Vera tries to kill Maria and puts Lionel in her stomach symbolically making him always a dependent child. Lionel then cuts himself out of her stomach symbolically being born again as Vera is killed and falls into the burning house. He recues Paquita and they escape as the police put the fire out and Lionel throws the pendent away no longer needing it as they kiss and walk off together.
The cinematography in the film is decent nothing incredible but good. There is a nice use of blue lighting in the film. there is a great sped up POV effect of the victims when Les kills a bunch of zombies with a cleaver and a knife only for it to then show the aftermath of a bunch of zombie parts with him standing triumphant. There is a cool shot were one of the zombie punks jumps on the law mover and ends up being ripped up. There is a great Silhouette shot every monster Vera rips Les’s head and spine apart predator style. There is also a cool POV shot from Vera’s monster form.
The special effects in the film are great and the best part of the film. From the begging of the film the effects are great when they cut the guy’s limbs off before finally kill him in an over-the-top gory scene, there is also a cool use of stop motion animation. There are great blood effects in the film were the monkey gets killed by vera and then the monkey bite has infected Vera with a pulsating wound. Vera also cuts the skin of her face open and eats a dog in great gory scenes. There is also some great gory bloody stuff in the film such as when the nurse gets her head ripped backwards and when green liquid gushes from a corpse. When zombie vera attacks the punks. Blood squirts everywhere is a bloody gory over the top scene as the priest rips their body parts off before being impelled. The special effects in the film range from flesh being eaten to a puppet used as a zombie child. The zombie make-up in the film is great with great gory effects such as a guy getting his rib cage ripped out. There are great gory practical effects in the film such as a guy getting the skin on his head removed to revel flesh and a man’s organs being removed. Paquite cuts a zombies hand off with scissors as they drag a guy through the serving hatch, but zombies rip all the flesh off his legs. A zombie punches through a women’s head in a gory scene as Les removes the zombie vicars’ teeth. A zombie woman is the thrown into a lightbox and fries her head as another zombie comes along made from intestines. Zombie guts get minced as the zombies are mutilated by a lawnmower and blood and guts goes everywhere. The film also has great puppetry with gore as a zombie baby rips through Rita’s face and walks inside her, and Vera becomes a giant zombie creature and bursts through the floorboards.
Dead Alive is a funny, fun, over the top gory film that any fan of horror movies, splatter films and b-movie shlock will absolutely love.
