Oppenheimer is a 2023 epic biographical thriller film written and directed by Christopher Nolan starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr and Florence Pugh. The film tells the sory of J. Robert Oppenheimer e American theoretical physicist credited with being the “father of the atomic bomb” for his role in the Manhattan Project—the World War II undertaking that developed the first nuclear weapons. Oppenheimer is a great deep exportation into the man’s life, the building of the bomb and morality around the events that took place.
The direction in the film is great. All the actors in the film work great with each other. There is a lot of interesting dynamics and connections with one another all surrounding their own personal lives. What makes these dynamics work however is how all these characters offer different opinions and sides to both Oppenheimer regarding the building and use of the atomic bomb. The bomb and Oppenheimer are both seen as almost a singular unit within the film and the characters reactions to both throughout is what makes for an interesting dynamic. The mood of the film is a sombre and serious one. There is a real sense of dread and weight that hangs over the film giving the film an existential terror is palpable throughout the film. The style of the film is dark and gloomy. The sense of dread is palpable throughout the film giving the film the film an almost ominous atmosphere.
Cillian Murphey does a good job as J. Robert Oppenheimer the man who created the atomic bomb. He tells the story of a morally complex character that does questionable things and is never portrayed as a hero but also has lots of moral complexity and sadness to him. Emily Blunt does a good job as Katherine Oppenheimer’s wife she plays a sympatric character that has to deal with the stress of Oppenheimer and is sympathetic. Matt Damon does a good job as Gen the director of the Manhattan project that butts head with Oppenheimer throughout the film but also has a level of respect for him. Robert Downey Jr does a good job as Lewis Strauss a member of the atomic energy commission that acts as a problem for Oppenheimer. Florence Pugh does a good job as Jean Tatlock a psychiatrist that is Oppenheimer’s love interest in the film.
The writing in the film is good. The film has genuine sense of dread within the film that is palpable. There is a real weight and tension that creates a scary sense of urgency which reflects with the characters and throughout the film as a scary point within the film. The film has a lot of moral complex quandaries that play out regards where these people are right, and the film never give a clear answer. I think this is ultimately a good thing as a good thing as it never tells the audience what to think and instead asks them to think for themselves. The cinematherapy in the film is good. The fil mis well shot and ordinated throughout. The film also has some great shots showing the chemical process of the bomb witch really help with the science behind the film. Finally, the special effects in the fil mare great. All the special effects are great and really suit the area of the film. the special effects showing the explosions are great as well and creates an incredible experience. The use of effects with the chemical reactions as well are great and really sell the otherworldliness of the film.
Oppenheimer is a great film about the history of the atomic bomb, its history, its aftermath, and the man who put it together.
